Appointments, fact-finding hearings, and e-adjudication
You may be required to participate in mandatory scheduled appointments.
These may be done over the phone or online via a secure form linked from an email we send.
If you miss a phone appointment or don't complete an online form, your benefits may be delayed or denied.
If you have an email address on file with the Division, we will send you a secure link that will take you to an online questionnaire. This e-Adjudication process replaces scheduled claims examiner appointments (or fact-finding hearings) and more efficiently processes your unemployment claim.
If you would prefer a phone hearing with a claims examiner, you can contact the call center before the e-Adjudication form’s expiration date, and we will reschedule your appointment. Your appointment will be subject to the claim examiner’s availability.
Once you complete the online questionnaire, the response is immediately routed to a claims examiner to review. The claims examiner may contact you if more information is needed about your separation from employment before they can make a determination about eligibility.
A claims examiner may call you without notice on a weekday from 7am-7pm. Be sure to answer blocked or unknown calls. If a claims examiner contacts you and you’re not prepared to provide any requested information, let them know you need more time. Our claims examiners will work with you to establish a mutually agreed upon response time.
If you applied for benefits by phone and we do not have an email address on file for you, your claims examiner appointment will be conducted by phone.
If you would like to change a phone appointment to an e-Adjudication appointment, please contact the call center.
The claims examiner will call you at the scheduled time. While every attempt will be made to call you on schedule, delays can occur. You must be available for two hours after the time scheduled.
The reason for the interview will be listed on the form you receive for the appointment. Please be prepared to discuss the stated reason for the interview. If the reason for the appointment is related to your employment, your employer will be notified of the interview and has the right to participate.
You may represent yourself or you may be represented at your own expense by an attorney or a non-attorney. If you are unable to keep the scheduled appointment or if you need more time to prepare for the interview, you may request a postponement by calling a Reemployment Call Center. You may request that your employer produce any documents which relate to your eligibility for benefits. You may request that statements be taken from your witnesses who have firsthand knowledge of the case. You or your representative will have the opportunity to question your own witness, present documents and provide a closing statement or summary. If the reason for the appointment is related to your employment, any questions that you may have for your former employer may be asked of the agency representative who in turn may, at their discretion, pose the questions to your former employer.
If you have any evidence that supports your claim, you may mail or fax the documents to the office shown on your scheduling notice. Make sure you include your Social Security number on all documents.
If you would like to change a phone appointment to an e-Adjudication online form, please contact the call center.
Important: While you are waiting for your claims examiner interview, you must continue to claim your weekly unemployment benefits as appropriate. You will receive "credit" for the weeks which you claim so that if your benefits are approved, you can be paid these weeks at a later date. If you do not claim your weekly benefits, you may lose them even if the claims examiner determines you are eligible for benefits.
If you are denied benefits, we will send a written determination explaining the reason for the denial and a notice of your appeal rights. You have the right to appeal the determination. If your appeal is approved, benefits will be issued for the weeks which you have claimed through weekly certifications.
If additional information is required, you will receive an email from "NJ Unemployment" which will direct you to NJDOL’s secure sign on page. Enter the email address you used to file your initial claim and password. This is the same email address that your e-Adjudication instructions were sent to.
- Please be sure to check your spam folder to ensure you haven’t missed this email.
- iPhone/Mac Users – Please use Chrome, Firefox or Edge browsers to complete this process. Users have experienced challenges uploading any required documents through the Safari browser.
- Our secure sign on page only asks for your email address and password. Emails asking for additional information, like your social security number, may be spam.
You will be directed to the Welcome page. Read the instructions on how to save this form and select “Next.”
You will be asked a series of questions, based on your Unemployment claim.
While we recommend answering these questions as soon as possible, you can save your answers at any point and return to this questionnaire.
For certain claims:
You may be asked to answer several questions about each employer you listed on your initial Unemployment claim. These employers will be listed on your screen.
For each employer:
- Select the blue box under the Action column
- Answer the required questions
- Click submit
Important: Many claimants forget to click “submit” after answering the questions about their previous employer. You MUST select “submit” in order to complete the e-Adjudication process. Not doing so can cause delays. A check mark will appear when you have submitted your answers to the questions regarding your leave from your employer(s). After submitting your answers, please continue to the rest of the form.
Upload any additional suggested or required information that will be useful for NJDOL when making a determination on your claim.
- Please use a standard file format such as PDF, JPG, JPEG, DOC or DOCX. Do not send attachments with the .HEIC extension; these files cannot be viewed. Please convert .HEIC files to an accepted file, such as a PDF or a JPG.
- You may take and upload a picture of these documents if it is in an accepted file format. Please ensure that the picture is not blurry, that it captures the entire document, and that the document is readable.

To upload your documents:
- Before you begin: Watch our helpful video on how to properly attach and upload documents.
- Click “Choose File” and locate the file you want to upload.
- Once the file is selected, click the small blue “Upload Document” button below the Choose File box.
- The file will appear at the bottom of this page in the box that says “Action".
If you do not see your file name under the “Action” box, then you did not attach the file correctly. Please ensure you clicked the small blue “Upload Document” button.
Review your responses and certify that they are true and accurate.
Important: Before submitting, please make sure you have uploaded all necessary documentation and the file name appears in the “Action” box. Once you click the Submit button, you will not be able to access this form again.
Our online e-adjudication process is faster than scheduling claims examiner appointments or fact-finding hearings by phone. Instead having to wait weeks for a phone appointment, we can email you a link to a secure questionnaire within days of your initial application.
That's why you need to regularly check your email after you apply online for benefits. We will use the email address you used to register your account to contact you if we need more information about your claim.
If this happens, we'll send you an email with a link to a secure online form. You will have up to 10 days to answer the questions in the online form.
If there is any question about the amount of Unemployment Insurance benefits you are entitled to receive, you will need to have a phone interview with a monetary representative. The representative will call you at the scheduled time. While every attempt will be made to call you on time, delays can occur. You must be available for two hours after the scheduled time.
At the time of the interview, please have available proof of employment (pay stubs, W-2 forms, etc.) for the last 18 months prior to filing your Unemployment Insurance claim. If applicable, we will also send your former employer(s) a request for wage and separation information to complete and return to us.
After the monetary interview, we will mail you a determination explaining the amount of benefits (if any) you are entitled to receive. You should carefully review the information contained in your determination. If you disagree with the determination, you have the right to appeal. Instructions for filing an appeal are on your determination.
You may be selected to participate in a mandatory program of reemployment services. Some of the services include testing and assessments, job counseling, job search workshops, job clubs, and direct job placements. You will receive an appointment notice with the date, time, and location of the appointment.
This is a comprehensive review/audit of an Unemployment Insurance claim for a randomly selected individual.
